The theme of the conference was ‘Diversity is Inclusion’ and it aimed to ‘bring together all the differences that make up the pharmacy profession from gender to age to race.’
Naina Chotai, President of NAWP, delivered a presentation on the work that NAWP is doing to promote diversity and inclusivity for women in pharmacy. Naina also highlighted how NAWP, working with the other PDA networks (Ability, BAME and LGBT+), will tackle the PDA’s wider agenda of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for the benefit of its membership.
Naina said: “It was an honour to present at the conference to the students who are the future of the pharmacy profession. NAWP’s aim and work-plan are focused on seeing all women with diverse characteristics involved and given an equal chance of success and opportunities in the pharmacy profession.”
Osariemen Egharevba-Buckman, BPSA Southern Area Coordinator and PDA Student Representative, said: “It was great to hear from Naina Chotai about the phenomenal work that NAWP is getting ready to do, especially with this being the first year that NAWP has been in association with the PDA. It was so informative for our members to hear about the gender disparities that arise amongst women although we are a female-majority profession, but we were highly encouraged about the future work that NAWP and the PDA are doing to change this. I am excited to see what is birthed with the changes that are soon to come and I hope that I will be a part of all to come.”
The event also included presentations from Amandeep Doll, Inclusion and Diversity Coordinator at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS), Mohammed Hussain, an experienced pharmacist honoured for his work on Diversity and Inclusion as an RPS Fellow, and Elsy Gomez Campos, President of the UK Black Pharmacist Association (UKBPA).
