The PDA’s analysis of the 2021 Safer Pharmacies Survey highlighted that worryingly, only 2 in 10 members feel safe in the workplace, and this is worse in some areas of the UK.
Early indications from the PDA’s latest survey show that lack of adequate support staff, frustration of patients who have been unable to access a GP appointment and other services, and shortages of medicines are the key areas that result in people behaving in an unacceptable way.
The PDA wants to hear from community and locum pharmacists to understand more about this issue, the types of incidents that are being experienced in community pharmacy, and the causes and flashpoints which can lead to pharmacists and pharmacy teams experiencing violence and abuse.
The PDA continues to advocate for a zero-tolerance approach to violence in pharmacy and calls upon all employers to take a preventative approach by conducting regular risk assessments around staff safety. This includes placing the emphasis on employers to take a firm stance on those responsible for subjecting pharmacists and pharmacy teams to violent and abusive behaviour.
This survey will close on Tuesday 3 May 2022.
