PDA membership figures are independently certified before being announced at each annual meeting. The latest AGM was held on Thursday 26 June and attendees were given the formal confirmation that the PDA had 40,001 members at its year end on 31 March 2025.
PDA membership grew by another 5.2% between April 2024 and March 2025. The majority of the net increase of 1,977 members is because of individuals recognising the benefits of membership and making the decision to join the PDA. Uniquely this year, around 300 of those new members are because of the joint decision of Boots Pharmacists Association’s (BPA) members to merge into the PDA, 96% of those who voted in a ballot were in favour.
It is important to note that the PDA’s membership numbers are independently verified by an approved person in accordance with legislation, whereas other pharmacy organisations may declare membership numbers which are not subject to any such scrutiny.
Mark Pitt, PDA Union General Secretary said, “We were created by, and for pharmacists and we do not represent owners, so have no conflict in that regard. We are committed to remaining exclusively for pharmacists and are by far the largest membership organisation that has that focus.
Passing the 40,000 milestone is of course significant, but we still have room to grow. We invite each employed and locum pharmacist who have not yet done so, to join us too. The more members we have, the greater our influence on everyone’s behalf.”
The PDA is an independent not-for-profit body that champions the interests of pharmacists and can influence employment and professional practice conditions from their perspective in ways that individuals cannot. The more members the PDA has, then the more resources that can be put to work for the profession.
In addition to acting for the collective, the PDA also provides a unique combination of legal defence, indemnity insurance, trade union representation and other benefits that members can call upon when needed. The PDA employs teams of experienced pharmacists, lawyers and other specialists to support the members.
