Protecting patient confidentiality: a professional reminder on accessing records

The PDA is issuing pharmacists a timely reminder of the professional obligations when accessing patient records, and the very real regulatory consequences where those obligations are breached.

Wed 3rd June 2026 The PDA

The PDA has observed a continued pattern in regulatory proceedings where some pharmacists face serious Fitness to Practise action arising from inappropriate access to patient records.

In response, the PDA has published new guidance which reinforces a key professional standard: patient records must only be accessed where there is a clear, legitimate and documented reason linked to care or another lawful function.

The guidance highlights that even seemingly minor lapses can amount to misconduct. It also underlines that all record access is traceable, and breaches are frequently identified through routine audit processes.

With potential consequences ranging from suspension to removal from the register, alongside dismissal from employment, the PDA is urging pharmacists to remain vigilant and ensure every access to patient data can be justified.
