NHS pay announcement 2026/27

Pharmacists and other NHS workers on Agenda for Change contracts have been told that the government has agreed the recommendation from the NHS Pay Review Body (NHSPRB) for a 3.3% pay increase for the 2026/27 annual pay review.

The Westminster and Welsh governments have announced that they will meet the PRB recommendation, and it is expected the Northern Ireland government will do the same, though these are separate decisions by governments in each nation that have responsibility for each National Health Service.

We are part of the NHS Staff Side council and represent pharmacists in ongoing discussions with the government year around. However, other than in Scotland, where pay is negotiated between the NHS Unions and government, the other UK nations currently work on a basis where governments, unions and others give evidence to the independent PRB who then recommend an increase for governments to consider, hence this is not the result of a pay ‘negotiation’.

Have your say on new GPhC proposals for SP and RP roles

We are inviting pharmacists to take part in an important survey that will help shape our response to current regulatory proposals affecting the role of the Superintendent Pharmacist (SP) and Responsible Pharmacists (RP).

Pharmacists’ insights and experiences are vital to ensuring that their voices are fully represented in discussions that will shape the future of our profession.

Responses will be used to:

  • Inform the PDA’s official response to the consultation
  • Strengthen the evidence base that the PDA presents on behalf of the profession
  • Reflect and amplify the views of PDA members, ensuring decision‑makers hear directly from practising pharmacists.

Supporting pharmacists at Morrisons

We are reminding pharmacists employed by Morrisons that they can seek support after media reports say that the multiple will be selling ‘dozens’ of their pharmacies.

We reacted to media reports last year about potential closures at Morrisons, which were later confirmed as four pharmacy closures alongside the closures of 52 cafés, 17 convenience stores, 35 meat counters and 13 florists across the supermarket’s network.

However, the sale of many Morrisons pharmacies now seems to be back on the agenda with further media reports saying that the Company Chemists Association member intends to sell ‘dozens’ of pharmacies after their overall business lost £381M last year. The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) register says Morrisons currently have 115 pharmacies.

Pharmacist Support launches 2026 Student Bursary Scheme

Our charity partner, Pharmacist Support, is proud to announce the launch of its 2026 Student Bursary Scheme, supported by Cencora Alliance Healthcare.

The scheme offers awards of £3,000 or £5,000 to MPharm students entering their final year in September 2026 who have experienced an unexpected challenge that has had both a personal and financial impact since starting their degree.

For more than a decade, the Student Bursary Scheme has quietly but powerfully changed lives. Since the scheme began in 2014 and up to 2025, 103 bursaries have been awarded, totalling £332,000, helping students stay on their courses, complete their degrees, and move forward into the profession.

Demand for support continues to grow. In the most recent scheme year, all 28 fully accredited pharmacy schools in Great Britain agreed to take part, with 88 applications received from students across 24 universities – a clear reflection of both the need for, and trust in, the scheme.

Danielle Hunt, Chief Executive of Pharmacist Support, said, “Students are the future of the profession, and some face unexpected hardship that puts their studies, wellbeing, and confidence at risk. The bursary scheme is about more than financial support – it’s about belief, reassurance, and helping students stay the course. We are incredibly grateful to Cencora Alliance Healthcare for standing alongside us for a third year and helping us make this life-changing support possible.”

Applications are now open

The 2026 Student Bursary Scheme will be open to students at fully accredited pharmacy schools until 20 April 2026. Full details, eligibility criteria, and application guidance can be found below.
